Mapping Intermedia 3 - Gestural Interfaces
Mapping Intermedia #3
For the final mapping assignment, we will consider how gesture can be considered both a physical act and a conceptual category in the context of live audiovisual performance. Thinking about how interfaces shape the way we interact with technology through gesture, we will interrogate assumptions of interactivity in digital media. Working to unpack the meaning of interaction, interface, and gesture, three foundation readings will introduce gesture as concept and explore assumptions of the "interface". In your groups, you'll each take up one additional perspective: the body as the origin of rhythm and value, poetics of relation, art making as a gesture itself, and how we can understand bodily presence through ephemeral performance. Supplementary readings explore illusory natures of interactive and immersive media.
