Mapping Intermedia 2 - Audiovisual Transformation
Audiovisual Transformation
For the second mapping assignment, we turn to transformation as both a critical concept and process for audiovisual artmaking. You'll explore how cyborg, glitch, and algorithmic feminisms adopt hybridity, error, and disruption to rethink relationships with machines, media, and digital space and shift power dynamics within systems and established hierarchies. Two foundation readings provide theoretical ground tracing the origins and stakes of transformation as a process and way of thinking. In your groups, you'll each dig into one additional lens on transformation: metamorphosis as a philosophical concept, ecological thought, glitch feminism and body politics in digital space, and algorithmic analysis. The supplementary readings offer further views into how artists and theorists have used transformation to challenge fixed categories, whether of gender, body, medium, or power itself.
